Benefits of Solar Panels for Churches & Houses of Worship

Is the cost of running your church, temple, mosque, or synagogue eating away at your organization’s funds? Keeping the lights on and equipment running takes a lot of power, and that power costs money. Turning the lights off between services can help, but not enough to make a serious difference in your expenses.

Solar panels provide a real, long-term solution. Adding commercial solar panels to church buildings can drastically reduce or even eliminate electricity costs for 25+ years, reducing operating costs and saving your organization money for decades.

How Can a Church Benefit from Solar Panels?

Installing solar panels has a long list of benefits for all types of worship centers and religious buildings.

Lower Operating Costs

With solar panels, you can generate some or all of your own electricity instead of purchasing it from your utility company. The money you save can be put directly back into your organization and used to further your mission!

Avoid Rising Energy Costs

Electricity rates are volatile and will rise over time. Solar panels lock you in at a lower rate and shield you from rising costs.

Environmental Stewardship

Solar panels generate electricity without burning fossil fuels, reducing your congregation’s impact on the environment. Installing solar panels on your church roof sets a good example for your community and may inspire homeowners and other organizations in your area to do their part for the environment.

New Solar Incentives for Non-Profits

Tax-exempt organizations, including houses of worship, can now save 30% on their solar panel installation costs with the new federal direct pay solar tax credit for non-profit organizations.

Solar Financing for Churches & Houses of Worship

There are many ways to finance your solar installation. We can help you choose the best financing option for your solar installation.

Cash

With a cash purchase, you will own your system outright from the beginning and you will receive all relevant incentives, including a 30% direct payment via the non-profit solar tax credit. The solar tax credit direct payment will reduce your upfront costs and you may be able to cover the difference by raising funds within your organization or applying for grants.

Solar Loans

With a solar loan, your organization can go solar for $0 down. You’ll have a fixed monthly payment and will pay off your system over time, reducing your upfront solar costs. When you finance your solar installation with a solar loan, you are the owner of the system and recipient of all relevant incentives, including a 30% direct payment via the non-profit solar tax credit.

Power Purchase Agreements

A Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) is a contract between a solar user and a solar owner. In a PPA, a business will pay for solar panels to be installed on your property, but they will own the system. You will purchase the electricity generated from the solar owner at a predetermined rate, which will be lower than your current utility rate. The owner of the system will, however, receive all relevant incentives.

Solar Lease

A solar lease allows you to lease a solar panel system from a lease provider. The solar panels will be installed at your property and you will be able to use the power they generate. You will pay a monthly lease payment and, in the seventh year, you’ll have the option to buy out your solar system. Under a solar lease, the lease provider receives all incentives.
