Massachusetts Renewable Energy Credit (REC) Program
What is a Renewable Energy Credit?
A Renewable Energy Credit (REC) is a tradable commodity representing proof that 1,000 kilowatt-hours (1 megawatt-hour) of electricity was produced by a registered renewable energy facility. Many states, including Massachusetts, require electricity suppliers to source a portion of their power from renewable technologies. Utilities purchase RECs generated from these systems to meet this requirement.
Will I still get net metering if I sell RECs?
Yes, if your utility offers net metering. RECs are generated based on your system’s total solar production, regardless of your home’s energy usage. Net metering is an additional benefit provided by your utility and does not affect your REC benefit.
How are RECs created?
Each system requires state certification to sell RECs and an account with the New England Power Pool Generation Information System (NEPOOL GIS), a state-designated third party that issues and tracks all credits in New England. RECs are created based on your system’s electricity generation (1,000 kWh = 1 REC).
How do I get certified with the state and an account in NEPOOL?
Your installer will provide us with the required technical information. Boston Solar will then submit all necessary documentation to get your system approved and registered for RECs. We will also establish and manage a NEPOOL account on your behalf. Note that this MA REC program differs from the SREC program that stopped accepting new systems in 2017. Boston Solar will register your system with MA DOER and pay you for the RECs as they are minted.
How is production reported to NEPOOL GIS?
Individuals cannot report their production directly. You must hire an Independent Verifier/Reporter who will report the production to NEPOOL.
When are RECs created?
NEPOOL creates RECs quarterly based on the following schedule. Only whole RECs are created; partial production rolls over to the next quarter.
- First quarter (January-March): RECs created on July 15th
- Second quarter (April-June): RECs created on October 15th
- Third quarter (July-September): RECs created on January 15th
- Fourth quarter (October-December): RECs created on April 15th
When do I get paid?
You’ll receive payment for RECs a couple of weeks after each quarterly minting. We offer payment via check or electronic deposit. Due to the NEPOOL minting cycle, if your system comes online in January, you’ll receive your first check in early August.
How do I know if I generate a REC?
The Boston Solar Customer Portal tracks all RECs created and sold. Your account will be updated on the day of each quarterly REC creation in NEPOOL. You can log in to see if you have any new RECs.
How do I track my REC production and sales?
The Boston Solar Portal maintains a history of all your RECs created and sold. After signing our paperwork, each customer receives an account in the Boston Solar Customer Portal. Your username and password will be emailed to you.
