Business owners asked, we answered

Business owners have specific questions related to their solar panel installation - we can help you answer them.  Have additional questions? Please contact us.

How common is it for businesses to use solar power?

Many business owners are surprised to find how many companies of all sizes, as well as government buildings, have already made the decision to use solar power. SunPower solar panels have been installed at a number of well-known retailers, school districts, and other government buildings, such as Macy's, and the University of California. If you own a commercial building, you are a candidate for a solar system.

How much do solar panels cost 2017?

Because each solar panel system is custom designed for a home or business, there is no “one cost” of solar panels. Each installation begins with a customized quote based on several factors, including how much you spend on electricity, how large your roof is, and if you’re a residential or commercial customer. For residential installations (and commercial, if chosen), Boston Solar uses SunPower solar panels, the most experienced solar panel company in the world. They come with a standard 25-year product, shipping and labor warranty, unmatched in the industry today. Click here to learn more about the products we offer.

How much will my business save with solar panels?

Boston Solar customers can save up to 100% of their utility bill, depending on monthly energy usage and amount spent.

Is financing available for commercial solar systems?

For commercial customers, Boston Solar offers various financing options including Solar Loans, Power Purchase Agreements (PPA) or Operating Leases.  To learn more about all of our commerical financing options, click here.

How long will it take to install my system?

For commercial customers, this depends on a number of factors including system size and electric utility requirements. Timelines can vary significantly. Please contact us to discuss your specific situation with a Solar Consultant.

Is there a warranty on my solar system?

Boston Solar offers the strongest warranty package in Massachusetts at no additional cost to the customer. We extend the warranties for panels and inverter(s) to 25-years and also include a 10-year workmanship guarantee.

What happens if my business moves?

If a commercial building with a solar system is sold, the new owners would take over the solar system and its benefits.

What is the business case for commercial installations?

Each company’s business case for solar will depend upon the factors that are most important to the organization. The extent to which the case will need to be accepted, and by whom, depends on the decision making framework. Typically, businesses are looking for the largest return on investment (ROI) and time to savings as well as their desire to become a green business. The fact that solar reduces operating costs, putting businesses in a position to reinvest that savings, is a driving factor.

How much will it cost to solar power my business?

Every solar panel system is custom designed. Between financing and incentives, customers are usually cash-flow positive in their first year. Massachusetts has one of the strongest solar incentive programs in the country. In addition, federal tax credits and low-interest solar loans contribute to a positive cash flow.

Is solar energy more expensive than utility rates?

Electricity prices typically fluctuate seasonally and have increased on average by 4% nationally over the last 10 years. By owning a solar system, you produce your own power and are less exposed to the volitility and future electricity cost increases.

What is the latest news in Massachusetts solar energy incentives for businesses?

On January 31, 2017, the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources (MA DOER) announced an extension to the lucrative Solar Renewable Energy Credit (SREC) program for businesses who purchase or finance a solar system.  SRECs provide a quarterly payment to the customer for every 1,4290-1,818 kWh of electricity produced, depending on the category you fall into (more about that here). However, SRECs will end at the end of 2017. You also qualify for a 30% federal tax credit. You will also qualify for depreciation.

If a customer chooses a solar lease or Power Purchase Agreement (commercial customers only) instead of purchasing or financing, they are not eligible for any federal or Massachusetts solar incentives.

What kind of maintenance do solar panels require?

Our solar systems are warrantied to last 25 years and are virtually maintenance free, with the exception of the inverters, which typically last 12-15 years. Click here to learn more about the products for commercial solar systems.

Will my business still need to use the electric utility?

You will always receive something from your energy company.  Even if solar covers 100% of your electricity needs, the electric utility still charges a minimum "customer charge" because they are still providing you with a meter and energy, should you need it. Solar energy needs to be consumed in real time, unless you are using a storage solution, currently not offered by Boston Solar. You will use the power from your system as the energy is generated. The energy not used is credited on your utility bill. When the sun is not shining or powering your home or business, you will use electricity from the grid. The amount of energy that your system generates will offset or, in some cases, eliminate the electricity part of your utility bill.

Solar Panels

Boston Solar always recommends utilizing the best solar panels in the market. SunPower Solar Panels are the highest quality and most efficient panels on the market today. They deliver maximum performance with premier technology. SunPower has been manufacturing for over 30 years, are rated #1 for durability and each one has a 25 year warranty (but are proven to last over 40 years).

However, we also off other solar panels for commercial installations.  Ask us about all of our options today.

A solar inverter is the heart of your solar system converting direct current (DC) energy into alternating current (AC) energy for use in your business.  That's why we carefully vet all inverter manufacturers and only utilize the best in the commerical market - SolarEdge, SMA or Yaskawa - Solectria Solar. Every business is unique, so we will choose the inverter that is best suited for your business after carefully evaluating the project.

Solar Energy Monitoring

Solar Energy Monitoring

The best part about having a solar system is knowing it's producing power and being able to see and understand the impact it's having on your electricity bill. With Solar Energy Monitoring, you will be able to see the impact your system is having on the environment and timelined charts telling the power you're producing. The monitoring chosen is specific to your project as there is never a one size fits all!

Operating Lease

If you choose a solar lease facilitated by Boston Solar, the solar lease provider owns the solar panel system, receives all of the federal tax credits and accelerated appreciation, and you have a monthly lease payment. At the 7th year, there is a potential buy out of the system at 15% or fair market value. With a solar lease, you will still receive benefits of a lower utility bill, but will not own the system, unless you decide to purchase it at the 7th year.

Power Purchase Agreement (PPA)

A power purchase agreement (PPA) is a contract between the solar system owner and the business owner, which consumes the electricity. A PPA allows a business owner to host a solar power system on their building, carport or site with absolutely no upfront costs. In exchange, the business owner agrees to purchase the electricity from the system owner at a pre-determined rate over a 20 or 30-year term.  The business owner puts $0 down, but the PPA provider owns the system, is responsible for the warranty and workmanship and also receives all of the federal and state incentives.

Solar Site Lease

A solar site lease is a lease agreement between a property owner and third party investor (i.e., solar installer, developer or financier). Solar panels are installed on the owner’s property (building or land) by the investor and an annual negotiated rate is paid to the property owner.  The property owner doesn’t pay anything for the solar array/installation nor does he use the power being produced on his property. The investor chooses an off-taker, or multiple, to consume the energy produced.
